Belarusian authorities have been cracking down dissent in every sector of society. Higher Education has not been spared: as of 21st May 2021,<\/span><b> at least 480 students have been detained and 154 were expelled from their universities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zbsunion.by\/en\/news\/pressure_on_students?fbclid=IwAR02rNKl4HPYhqe8-AUfrA0lwCXuFvQkghiLiJ1M-aUwi7QO0dQi36OJDrE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more information). At least 41 students are under criminal prosecution (with sentences up to 4 years of prison), <\/span><b>12 of whom are now under a collective trial (the \u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/zbsunion.by\/studpolitzek\/en?fbclid=IwAR2z7_VHcSR1G04TjIHAgusm9EP-3ZYyd8VdDRZcssJfo19tbwpmR6prApo#!\/tab\/315241817-1\"><b>student case<\/b><\/a><b>\u201d) started on 14th May 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many student activists are <\/span><b>now living in exile<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several European countries: their safety is however not granted, as the case of <\/span><b>hijacking of the Ryanair flight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Athens to Vilnius perpetrated by\u00a0 Belarusian authorities <\/span><b>to arrest the journalist Roman Protasevich and the European Humanities University Sofia Sapega <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has shown (read <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lss.lt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Belarus-statement-.pdf?fbclid=IwAR3JFPo3fAu-8HVi2NbQMCs29miLI7YkycvZBhrmYwuMOu5iOVNHhcwC6TY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the joint statement issued by EHU student union, the Lithuanian National Union of Students, the Belarusian Students\u2019 Association and the European Students\u2019 Union).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belarusian students need your help! Here is a list of things that you can do to help them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Stay informed and spread news: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zbsunion.by\/en\/news\/pressure_on_students?fbclid=IwAR02rNKl4HPYhqe8-AUfrA0lwCXuFvQkghiLiJ1M-aUwi7QO0dQi36OJDrE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BSA report on repressions against students (it is regularly updated); read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1OK_VEYLy2YDWBA7Is6flOFeOhKTDzJja\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BSA report on repressions in Academia in period from August to December 2020; read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zbsunion.by\/studpolitzek\/en?fbclid=IwAR2z7_VHcSR1G04TjIHAgusm9EP-3ZYyd8VdDRZcssJfo19tbwpmR6prApo#!\/tab\/315241817-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stories of the 12 students involved in the \u201cstudent case\u201d; promote the Scholars\u2019 At Risk<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholarsatrisk.org\/2020\/11\/call-to-action-in-support-of-scholars-and-students-in-belarus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> call to action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; share Amnesty International <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eurasia.amnesty.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/crackdown-on-students-in-belarus.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publication <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with\u00a0 some of the stories of the detained students; promote the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eua.eu\/news\/699:belarus-eua,-esu-and-sar-call-on-europe-to-take-action-against-criminalisation-of-students-and-academics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joint statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the European University Association, Scholars At Risk and the European Students\u2019 Union on Europe to take action against criminalisation of students and academics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Organise peaceful demonstrations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: in big cities or big universities (e.g. through solidarity chains, or student gatherings with posters and placards) to (1) raise awareness on ongoing persecution of peaceful demonstrators and (2) to show support to Belarus and students. Please share (if possible in English and\/or\u00a0 in your native language) pictures, videos and live streams of your demonstrations on social media using #westandwithbelarus \/ #freebelarus and tag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Europeanstudents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zbsunion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BSA <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/belarusboss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOSS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each quarter donors will receive a report on the funds received and spent. Please share (if possible in English and\/or in your native language) any funding campaigns on social media using #westandwithbelarus \/ #freebelarus and tag <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Europeanstudents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zbsunion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BSA <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/belarusboss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOSS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Call for attention to the student repression and the exiled students by the European authorities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can contact the MEPs of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/delegations\/en\/d-by\/members\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Parliament\u2019s Delegation for relations with Belarus <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to organise a specific session to draw attention upon repressed and exiled students.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Call upon your higher education institutions to address letters to Belarusian institutions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Address joint letters co-signed by your student unions (national\/regional\/local\/ institutional) and your institutional leaders (deans, senates, councils and academics) to the universities in Belarus (1) condemning violation of students\u2019 rights to peaceful demonstrations, (2) demanding values of academic freedom to be upheld, (3) to express a warning to terminate any engagement with those Belarusian universities where students reportedly being persecuted and detained. Contacts of the Belarusian universities and their social media accounts, as well as the list of partnerships they have with European universities, can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1LOGnLdAop9bLFvzhh-jVh-OQopwUi1JU\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
