The choice of the European path of development was made by the people of Ukraine during the <\/span>Revolution of 2014<\/span><\/a>. This aspiration was approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the Constitution of Ukraine as a new goal of the country’s development. In addition, Ukraine has concluded an <\/span>Association Agreement with the European Union<\/span><\/a>, which provided for the necessary changes in various areas that need to be done by Ukraine, as a state, for further potential accession to the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today we can say with confidence that Ukraine has grown significantly as a state, with its foundations being supported through democratic values. Ukraine has implemented and continues to implement the necessary reforms, as well as increase its level of European values. These actions have brought Ukraine significantly closer to the level of European Union member states.<\/span><\/p>\n

The overall value and goal of the endeavour are to raise the economic and investment attractiveness of the Ukrainian economy, bridging the gap inherent to a post-communist state. The agreements signed with the European Union also permit a chance for further integration into the European family, paving the way for future integrations, economically, politically and socially. Maintaining that choice with adamant determination, today Ukraine defends this choice at the cost of life – the choice of a modern democratic European state for themselves and their children.<\/span><\/p>\n

In these difficult times, Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence,\u00a0 its territorial integrity and its people, but also for defending its European vector of development and values.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, Ukraine’s <\/span>support among European nations is high<\/span><\/a>, paving the way to unquestionable independence and the democracy of the state. In addition to the people of Europe, Ukraine is <\/span>supported by European institutions<\/span><\/a>. Thus, the <\/span>European Parliament has already adopted a Resolution<\/span><\/a> recommending that the European Union grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for the European Union at the next European Union summit in June 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking into account all the aforementioned, we believe that granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for the European Union is a decision that will help in assuring Ukraine has the same access and rights as so many Europeans do. This perspective will give the European Students’ Union and other European organisations the opportunity to work even closer with Ukrainian partners on building the European identity through many common areas. In the field of higher education, many such areas remain underexplored, such as access to higher education, academic freedom, students’ rights, access to health services, quality of education etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, we, the European Students\u2019 Union, together with the Ukrainian Association of Students, the prime organisers of Ukrainian youth, call on the European Union to grant Ukraine a candidate status for membership in the European Union at the forthcoming European Union summit in June 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n
